CDW was retained to assess subsurface soil and groundwater conditions after cleanup of a spill of approximately 1,400 gallons of liquid phenol from an above ground tank at a manufacturing facility in Central Massachusetts. After initial assessment, it was determined that substantial release migration of phenol had occurred in groundwater and that immediate response actions would be required to prevent an imminent hazard relative to migration of phenol to surface water. CDW installed a groundwater interceptor and extraction system to prevent migration of phenol to a nearby stream that discharges into a larger river. The system operated for 18 months until concentrations of phenol in soil and groundwater were reduced to below acceptable standards allowing for a Permanent Solution.
